The putting in of the joints

Bear with jointsAnother work of the women in the Needlework Room is to put the joints into the arms, legs and head.

For the joints HERMANN-Coburg uses still today the old traditional pasteboard disc. These pasteboard discs have a size from a 1/2 to 6 inches. All pasteboard discs have a hole, where the today used nail must push through. Because in former times cotters were used for the joints, this work is still today called to cotter the arms and legs and the head, and still today the women, who do this work are traditionally named the cotter women.

On the left picture you see the cotter room of the Max Hermann factory in 1930

In addition to the pasteboard disc, a very small metal disc is necessary too for every joint, otherwise the nail or the cotter would not be fixed.

When the joint is put into the arms, legs and head, the women have now to close the hole with needle and thread till only the nail looks outside. Till today this work is done in the same old original kind like in former times.
